Green Schools campaign takes effect in Marshalstown NS!

As you know, we are taking part in the Green Schools programme and are working on the Travel theme.

As part of our work on promoting sustainable travel to and from school, we have decided to launch a “No Idling” campaign outside the school gates.

From Wednesday 15th January, all vehicle owners are asked to turn their engines off whilst they wait to help improve air quality, reduce emissions and create a healthier environment around our school gates.
By making this simple air change, we can make a real difference and improve the quality of air we all breathe. Let’s give it a go!

We have uploaded some information on the facts and myths associated with idling in cars and it makes for interesting reading!

We would like to thank you for your continued support and we will keep you updated. 🙂

Autumn adventures!

Junior and Senior Infants have been super busy learning all about Autumn and the changes we see during this beautiful season. We created our wonderful art work using cotton buds. We also worked hard in Science and we learned all about planting. We designed faces on our potatoes and placed cotton wool and cress inside the hole in our potatoes. We can’t wait until our potato people grow hair at home. Happy Autumn everyone!

Senior Infant Action Day for Travel!

Senior Infants had a fantastic day on Wednesday as part of our WOW launch day. They began their day by ‘parking n’ striding’ from the church up to the school. They ate some healthy fruit when they arrived to school. They then walked the yellow route with Nicola from the Irish Heart Foundation. This walk is part of our Sli @ School walking routes.

They enjoyed a wonderful presentation all about the sights and sounds on our journey to school. They did this with Edwina our travel officer. They also took part in some scientific experiments involving paper aeroplanes! Click on the photos to see all of the action! 🙂

5th & 6th Class visit Bunclody Library

The 5th and 6th Class children enjoyed a little tour to Bunclody Library this morning. The purpose of the visit was to listen to and watch a presentation by Ciarán of the Irish Wildlife Trust. This presentation focused on the wildlife which is native to Ireland and Ciarán was very impressed by how much the children already knew as well as by how much more they wanted to learn about Irish animals. It was a great lecture and the children and teachers really enjoyed it! 🙂

3rd Class Volcanoes!

3rd Class have been very busy recently learning all about volcanoes. They researched some volcanoes in Hawaii and Pompeii. Miss McCarthy was lucky enough to visit Pompeii and they are now going to use her research to investigate volcanoes further! Well done 3rd Class 🙂

Green Schools Flag Ceremony

Yesterday was a special day for Marshalstown NS as it was the day we received our third green flag. This flag was achieved by saving water on a daily basis for the past two years. 68 schools from Carlow, Waterford and Wexford were in attendance at the ceremony and of these schools, 9 were receiving their water flag.

We learned that all of the schools throughout Ireland that worked on their water flag for the last two years helped to save over 380 million litres of water! That same amount of water could be used for 250 million baths, 5.2 million fish bowls or 1.6 billion cups of tea! The figures are just astonishing! We were also told that the schools around the country have helped to make Ireland the number one country in the world for participating in the Green Schools programme. Well done everyone! 🙂

A great day was had by all and a special thank you goes to all of the children and teachers who helped to make the Green Schools programme in Marshalstown such a success. 🙂
