Travelling Through Time in 4th Class!

4th class have been learning all about the history of the postal service in Ireland. They worked in groups to complete a timeline of the important events. The used a variety of envelopes in different shapes and sizes to complete their timelines.
All of the groups were so creative at using the envelopes to represent the different events and they all worked so hard!
We hope you enjoy our work 😀

Happy Halloween!

Something mysterious happened in Marshalstown just over a week ago. All of the children vanished and were replaced with witches, vampires, goblins, wizards, superheroes, skeletons, babies and many more weird and wonderful creations! Luckily, all the children had the midterm break to recover and all were back to normal today. Click on the photographs for a closer look. 🙂

Happy Halloween! 🙂

Action Day for Water

On Wednesday 4th October, we held our Action Day for Water as part of our commitment to attaining our third green flag. The whole school participated in the event. The goal was to raise as much awareness as possible about how we use water in our lives, both at home and at school, as well as become aware of how we can actively save water. Every class explored the theme of water through Maths, English, SESE, SPHE, Art and Music. Every child pledged to save water on a water drop and we will use these drops to create a “pool of promises” in our school.

The Junior Infant class explored the Water theme through Maths experiments on capacity, e.g. how many cups does it take to fill a jug?. They also discussed the importance of water for the plants and flowers in the world. They planted daffodils which will blossom in the Spring. The infants became scientists when they investigated how to make a rainbow using skittles and water! They also created their own rain clouds using shaving foam and water. One of their favourite activities was learning a song called “If all the little raindrops…”

Senior Infants were also feeling the love for water and worked on a poem with their teacher. They also became scientists when the investigated the water cycle, in particular what happens when a rain cloud becomes too heavy. The children also made their own rain clouds using shaving foam and food colouring.

1st Class investigated the water cycle and discovered that the water on earth is millions of years old…it just keeps going round and round in the cycle! They also investigated how to make a rainbow using smarties and water. The water theme was also evident in their Literacy lessons as they read and discussed a poem on the water theme.

2nd Class learned a fantastic song about the water cycle which explained all the various stages of the cycle while they also listened to and sang Octopus’ Garden by The Beatles. Maths also had a watery theme as their addition and subtraction sum answers was a colour by numbers sheets which revealed an underwater world! The watery theme continued in Art which was based on reflections in water.

3rd Class explored the water theme through four experiments: Archimedes principle, Condensation, Dissolution and Floating and Sinking. They also read and discussed a poem based on this theme.

4th, 5th and 6th Class investigated water through experiment stations: Water timer, Bending water, Water Wheel, Walking on Water,  Creeping Colours, Shaving Foam Rain Clouds and Hydration Station. The topic of weather and climate was explored and discussed in SESE while the ways in which we can conserve and save water were discussed in SESE/SPHE.

A great day was had by all and the Green Schools Committee is hugely grateful to all of the children and teachers who participated in the event and helped to make it such as success! We’re not finished yet however, and our work will continue throughout the year towards attaining our third green flag!

School Tour 2017

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Classes set off on their 2017 school tour yesterday. With great excitement, they filed onto the bus convoy and waved their families goodbye. The destination was the Let’s Go camp in Waterford. They enjoyed zorbing, climbing towers, human foosball, go-karting and many other activities. It’s safe to say a brilliant time was had by all and there were a lot of exhausted but happy children returning to Marshalstown yesterday evening.
