Travelling back in time…welcome to a Victorian Tea Party!

On Tuesday 25th June, there was great excitement in Marshalstown NS when Miss McCarthy and her 5th and 6th Class students held a Victorian Tea Party for the staff, students and families of Marshalstown.

The children put huge work into making the tea party a wonderful success. Formal invitations were issued, a huge variety of cakes and sandwiches were made while  costumes were worn to add to the realistic effect of the tea party.

Every student performed their roles with impeccable manners, as was typical during the Victorian era, while all parents and staff remarked on how professional, organised and authentic the experience was. The children worked incredibly well together and should be extremely proud of their efforts. Miss McCarthy also deserves a special mention for enabling the children to create  a genuine and historically faithful representation of a Victorian tea party. 🙂

Unfortunately not every child was able to be photographed on the day but to those children whose photo is not here, please know that your efforts were invaluable as well as essential to the success of the tea party. 🙂

Special thanks is due to all parents and children who baked or bought cakes, biscuits etc for the event. The staff of Marshalstown NS are also very grateful to the parents and students who stayed behind after school to tidy up the tables, wash dishes and generally restore order to the lawns and classrooms!

Click on the photos below for a closer view of all the action! Well done everyone 🙂

Good luck Shauna :)

All the staff and children of Marshalstown NS would like to wish the very best of luck to Shauna, one of our 6th Class students, when she takes part in the Leinster Spelling Bee Championship on Thursday 26th June in Carlow.

If Shauna makes it through the first few rounds (and we are sure she will!), the remaining rounds will be aired on the radio. Tune into 2fm on Thursday morning.

Good luck Shauna!!

1st and 2nd Class on tour!

Recently, the boys and girls of 1st and 2nd class travelled to Pirates Cove, Courtown as part of our school tour. While there, we enjoyed crazy golf, bowling and the fun cave! After a few hours of playing, we all enjoyed our hot lunch of chips, sausages and chicken nuggets.

When we had finished our lunch, we travelled to Wells House where we spent some time in the playground and spent some of our pocket money in the little craft shops. We also listened to one of the guides tell us all about life for children in the Victorian era. They had only two sets of clothes and hardly any toys-shocking! We are very lucky that we don’t live in that era anymore!! 🙂

3rd & 4th go surfing!

Recently, 3rd and 4th class travelled to Tramore to take part in various activities as part of their school tour.

Our first stop was to the Oceanics Surf School, where we met our surfing instructors and listened to a water safety talk before we got to put on our wetsuits and carry our surfboards down to the beach. We had a great time splashing, crashing and surfing in the water. It was a fabulous, sunny day so it made our time in the water so much more enjoyable.

After our lunch, we went exploring rockpools with our ecologist guides, Glen and Ann. We found lots of crabs (dead and alive!), starfish and other creatures that live in the water.

We were then lucky enough to visit the RNLI lifeboat where we heard all about the important and dangerous work that the volunteers do. It is hard to believe that the men and women who put their own lives in danger to save others don’t receive any financial help from our government. We know now that whenever we see the RNLI fundraising that we should support them as much as we can.

Finally, it was time to go to Mistys for burgers and chips before spending some cash in the local tourist shops. Then we boarded the bus to head back home to Marshalstown. A great day was had by all! 🙂

Magic in Marshalstown!

On Friday the 14th June, there was a great surprise for the children in Marshalstown NS as we had a magician, named Magic Carl,  visit our local community centre.

He performed some amazing tricks including making a bottle of coke disappear, putting a burning candle through his hand and somehow he also made a rabbit appear into an empty cage!!

All the children were highly entertained and some lucky children even got to perform some tricks themselves.

We would like to thank the family that paid for and organised this treat for the children of Marshalstown NS. It was hugely appreciated and very much enjoyed by everyone.

One of Wexford’s Greatest Hurlers visits the school

George O’Connor, one of Wexford’s greatest hurlers, visited the school twice over the last few weeks. He spoke to the children about the importance of a healthy diet,  talked about hurling and took the time to watch and advise the students as they practiced their hurling skills. It was a great honour to have George come to school and spend some time with us. IMG_1888 George O'Connor

Co. Wexford Rural Sports Day by Dylan, Fionn, Orlagh & Niall

On the 14/5/2014 at 9.30, 31 pupils and two teachers set off to Bree School Sports with excitement in our hearts. On the bus we talked and joked about the day ahead of us. We eventually got to Bree and there we found a nice place to look at the races. We watched our fellow classmates race. Tadhg Dunne (U11), Jack Morris (U10) and Kate Doyle (U8) made it to the finals, but unfortunately we had no winners. Finally the relays started and luck was on our side when the U10 relay team (Jack Morris, Fionn O’Leary, Dylan Bolger and Conor Doyle) made it through their heat and semi – final to go on and win first place in the final!! It was a brilliant day and we all went home with smiles on our faces.
