A fond farewell to Matty

Recently, all the children and staff at Marshalstown NS had to say a sad farewell to our GAA instructor Matty, who  taught GAA skills every Friday for the past few years. Matty was, and still is, loved by all the children at the school. They loved seeing him walk through the gates every Friday as they knew they would have a good laugh with him as well as learn valuable GAA skills. Matty took a great interest in the progress of the children and the school team and would regularly give pep talks to the team before a match.

We  wish Matty all the very best for all his future endeavours. Thank you for everything Matty! 🙂

Soil – it’s just dirt…isn’t it?

3rd and 4th Class conducted an interesting experiment on soil this term. We were investigating the properties of soil and if soil is the same regardless of where it comes from.

We collected a soil sample in a jar, filled it with water and then shook the jar to loosen and mix up the soil. This was then left to settle over a number of weeks and the results were very interesting.

As the photographs show, each soil sample was a different shade of brown (even those taken from the same local area) and was made up of pebbles, clay, silt, heavy organic matter or light organic matter (twigs, grass etc) that we couldn’t see while the soil was dry. By soaking the soil in water, we were able to see the different layers in the jar. We know now that soil is not just dirt!! 🙂

Where do you buy your food?

3rd and 4th Class recently studied the topic of Transport in class and through this study we focused on the type of goods that are moved around the world by planes, trains, automobiles, ferries etc. We were very surprised to discover that, although we buy our food in our local Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Supervalu and Dunnes Stores, the food has actually travelled hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles before it arrives in the shops.

We discovered we had bought apples from New Zealand, Chile and Mexico, grapes from Italy, lettuce and tomatoes from Holland to mention just a few places. Click on the photograph for a closer view of our world map of food.
