The butterfly diaries

There was great excitement in 3rd and 4th class this week as our butterflies started to emerge from their chrysalides. It started on Monday with just one butterfly which emerged overnight. The others gradually came out of their cocoons over the following days while today, we actually got to see a butterfly break free from its cocoon live in the classroom! 🙂

The red stains, which look like blood, are actually the red liquid which the butterfly pushes through its wings in order to expand them.

We had a special ceremony today to release the butterflies. The song “Let it go” was our soundtrack! However, two butterflies refused to leave the habitat so we are going to try to persuade them to fly off tomorrow morning.

This was a really interesting experiment and experience for both the children and their teacher. 🙂
